There is now a range of recycled foam packaging materials available, with options from 35% to 100% recycled. Recycled foams include Ethafoam HRC (high recycled content) and MRC (max recycled content), Stratocell R, and Ecozote recycled Plastazote. An experienced foam converter can recommend the best material for your application, taking into account the required protection, budget, appearance, and the percentage of recycled content.

There is typically minimal – and often zero – cost difference between using recycled and non-recycled foam. However, using foam packaging with more than 30% recycled content means you avoid additional charges levied by the UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax.

Recycled plastic foam packaging is recyclable. However, UK kerbside schemes do not currently collect the material. As such, nearly all recyclable foam requires specialist processing centres. Several foam converters – such as Suttons Performance Packaging – have on-site foam recycling facilities that customers can utilise.

There are several reasons why your business should use sustainable foam packaging. Firstly, it minimises the environmental impact of your packaging (and overall operations).
